Guy Verhofstadt: Russia's aggression in Ukraine will lead to a new world order

It is now clear that Russian aggression in Ukraine will lead to a new world order in which we will need a more integrated, wiser, and more autonomous Europe.

This was stated by the Co-Chair of the Executive Board of the Conference on the Future of Europe, Guy Verhofstadt, at a briefing at the Conference on the Future of Europe, to be held on 8 and 9 April at the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg.

The focus of the sixth plenary session of the forum, in addition to a stronger economy, health, security, European democracy, and migration, are the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Verhofstadt emphasizes the importance of a forum in which politicians and citizens work together to determine the direction of EU development. According to him, this is very important because of the changed realities of the Old Continent as a result of the war in Ukraine. The importance and meaning of the joint work of politicians and citizens are key to the development of Europe, commented Verhofstadt and said that this is one of the recommendations of citizens from the conclusions of the forum.

The Vice-President of the European Commission (EC), Dubravka Šuica, called for attention to the World Donation Conference for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, which will take place tomorrow, April 9, in Warsaw as part of the Stand up for Ukraine campaign. The event was convened by EC President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Dubravka Šuica informed that the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, is expected to take part in the event in support of Ukraine.

According to Dubravka Šuica, the war in Ukraine has completely changed the world order, as well as EU citizens. She noted that she knew what war meant and saw it with her own eyes as a direct witness to the war in the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. “I know what it means to be helpless,” said Šuica, a Croat by nationality. She said Ukraine had the full support of Europe. “Ukrainians are equal to us, they have full access to all services in the European Union – accommodation, education, health, social care, jobs.
